Life is too short to waste on cultural elitism - and this obsession with undermining the worth and value of popular culture is a very disturbing problem for todays creatives.

Ahhh, “Popular” Culture, the thorn in the paw of Cultural Studies, the “middlebrow cult of the popular (..) holding literature to ransom”, the braying mass outside the ivory towers of the cultural elite; those self-proclaimed protectors of our cultural wealth that rail against cultural populism.

Jonathan Jones, time to open the gates and embrace new...

What is 'No Man's Sky'?

One simple word. Maths. I’ll expand on that idea in the ‘Procedural Generation’ section.

‘No Man’s Sky’ is a game developed by a small indie developer known as ‘Hello Games’. They have made a couple of small games previously such as ‘Joe Danger’ however ‘No Man’s Sky’ is a much more ambitious project in both size and scale.

The basic premise is that you start off your existence on a planet. You need to find resources to leave the planet and start travelling the universe. What’...

UPDATE: Details of UK release and screenings: http://tickets.attackontitanmovie.co.uk/

Last week’s Manchester Comic Con was an incredibly fun and surreal experience, from seeing the mass of ‘Attack on Titan’ cosplay to dancing ‘Metal Gear Solid’ cardboard boxes. I am still waiting on a few videos of Q and A sessions from the event covering the voice of Naruto, cast from the Arrow and two of Doctors (Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy). Unfortunately no gaming news from this event, but have no fear gamescom is pretty much here....

It's May, and it's MCM. That can mean only one thing. Bring on the games.

So, the main game we got our hands on over the weekend was Lego Jurassic World. Obviously, since the film is yet to be released, the levels on offer here are those from the original Jurassic Park movie. First up is the scene where Dr Sattler is inspecting a poorly dinosaur. Right from the outset, the humour that permeates most other Lego games is on show with Dr Sattler's ability to dive into a festering pile of Dinopoo and unearth an object vital for the quest...

The folks over at Sci Fi Weekender headquarters asked you who wanted to see at next year's event, and they have responded in kind. The living legend that is Brian Blessed will once again be gracing us with his presence at next year's event after coming in at number #6 in the poll.

Having had the pleasure of seeing both of his previous appearances, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it's worth the trip over Mordor simply for his Q&A alone.

In case you were in any way dubious about exactly how engaging and brilliant a...

Between is the story of a town under siege from a mysterious disease that has wiped out everybody except those 21 years old and under. The series explores the power vacuum that results when a government has quarantined a 10-mile diameter area and left the inhabitants to fend for themselves.

Between stars Jennette McCurdy and was created by Michael McGowan, who executive produces along with Don Carmody (Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Goon, Chicago), David Cormican (The Tall Man, Faces in the Crowd), and Naveen Prasad, Executive Vice-...

If you've read Ferg's recent review of Jupiter Ascending and know my personal feelings towards the Matrix Trilogy and Speed Racer, then you'll know that the Wachowskis are not exactly flavour of the month here at The Wonky Spanner. However there may be a glimmer of hope in the near future in the form of Sense8, a forthcoming colloboration between them, J. Michael Straczynski and Grant Hill.

Sense8 is the story of eight people from around the world whose lives are suddenly and inexplicably connected in a fight for their own...

It was 9am on a wet Sunday morning as I made my way to Thirsty Meeples, the glorious mecca of gaming and geekery, in the heart of Oxford.  Why was I up and shambling around at such an unholy hour? Well, for the regional finals of the UK Settlers of Catan tournament.  Obviously.

Here is my account of the day, how I fared in the games, what mistakes I made and what lessons I learnt over the course of 5 hours of seriously intense board gaming.  Obviously the account only takes into...

Welcome to a trip down nostalgia lane. My Final Fantasy career started in the long forgotten days of youth when my cousin introduced me to Final Fantasy 8. The game followed a surly young man named Squall and his quest to save the world with an odd party of people who eventually he called friends.

The magic of Japanese RPG’s in those days was the insane amount of depth to story and the surreal environments and concepts that surrounded the story. Japanese culture within computer games has often had a real grounding in the fallout of...
