Ok, here we go...

Captain America: Civil War is a clever, tense and often emotional, rollercoaster ride of a film; charting the struggle within the Avengers as Rogers & Co. have the fallout from their actions laid out before them. Consequence is the over-riding theme of the film.

The chain of events from the previous films, added to the MCU's own version of the "Stamford Incident", leads to the Sokovia Accords, a piece of legislation that leads to a schism within the group. Stark is pro-registration and the belief that the Avengers need to be accountable to a higher power, whilst Cap is still very much for personal freedom and accountability, and fears that a higher power may send the team on missions that serve the ulterior motives of their new handlers.

The film is a slow build of simmering tension over the first hour, as these ideological clashes eventually lead to fisticuffs with the reappearance of Bucky. But, like with any good spy drama -which both...

Castle - Season 8, Episode 1 “XY”

We spoke a lot about this show on our finale round up episode of the podcast.  The season 7 finale felt like a perfect wrap up for this show, and was explicitly written to be one as the writers didn’t know whether the show was getting picked up for an 8th Season.  Luckily for everyone it did, but how do they kick of a new season without the usual cliffhanger resolve...

Life is too short to waste on cultural elitism - and this obsession with undermining the worth and value of popular culture is a very disturbing problem for todays creatives.

Ahhh, “Popular” Culture, the thorn in the paw of Cultural Studies, the “middlebrow cult of the popular (..) holding literature to ransom”, the braying mass outside the ivory towers of the cultural elite; those self-proclaimed protectors of our cultural wealth that rail against cultural populism.

Jonathan Jones, time to open the gates and embrace new cultural ideas and not be so frightened by the “popular”.  Time to accept that “..dissolving the difference between serious and light reading..” is as necessary in the literary world as it is within my own Academic discipline of Musicology.  Time to move away from neo-Foucaldian ideas, and accept that culture is indeed both an end in itself AND the product of autonomous agents, both individuals or communities.  Time to accept that...

It was 9am on a wet Sunday morning as I made my way to Thirsty Meeples, the glorious mecca of gaming and geekery, in the heart of Oxford.  Why was I up and shambling around at such an unholy hour? Well, for the regional finals of the UK Settlers of Catan tournament.  Obviously.

Here is my account of the day, how I fared in the games, what mistakes I made and what lessons I learnt over the course of 5 hours of seriously intense board gaming.  Obviously the account only takes into consideration the tables I played at, as I couldn’t be everywhere.  This account also assumes a level of familiarity with the game.  If you've never played it before then you should check out Wil Wheaton and Friends playing it on TableTop.  (There's a link in the sidebar where you can got to pick up your own copy, it's totally worth it)...

Wondering when the wheels would come off the Marvel movie machine? When they’d finally put out a bad film? Yeah? Yeah, well it’s not with this one buddy, this one was fantastic.

The opening set piece sets the mood for the whole movie.  Frenetically paced but incredibly well balanced, it manages to both establish the fact that the Avengers have clearly been busy since Hydra’s reemergence at the end of Winter Soldier (raiding Hydra bases in search of Loki’s staff and generally kicking ass along the way); as well as providing the trigger for Stark’s single minded pursuit of the Ultron project.  It does all this while also introducing us to two new players in the twins Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. (“He’s fast, she’s weird” as described by Maria Hill to the Cap)

Obviously things don’t go quite to Stark’s plan, and Ultron...

Team NerdVsWorld have gotten their grubby little hands on a Collector's Edition copy of Warlords of Draenor to give away.
For a full list of all the extra bonus goodies that come in this special edition boxset you can click here but suffice to say it is an absolute must have for anyone into World of Warcraft.

What do you have to do to win this most excellent prize I hear you ask? Well, it's really quite simple.  All you need to do is name a future episode of the NerdVsWorld podcast. To do this you simply switch out one word, or part of a word, in a movie name with the word "Nerd".  For example, previous episodes have had titles such as "The Good, The Bad, and The Nerd", "For a Fistful of Nerds", "Weekend at Nerdies" etc, etc...

Once you have come up with your nerd infused movie title all you need to do is tweet it...

So this year I decided that I would embark on the Ready Player One Film Challenge, and attempt to watch every film named, referenced or alluded to in this most excellent of geeky books.

To that end I have compiled what I think is a complete list of every movie reference, and I shall be working through them, in no particular order, over the course of 2015. If you see any glaring ommissions from my list, please do get in touch and I shall update it accordingly.

Between myself and Spindles we'll be updating the list with the dates we've watched the films.

The Complete(ish) List of Films Referenced in Ready Player One:

Film Brendan Spindles
Ghostbusters  24th Jan  16th August
Heathers  10th Jan
Star Wars (IV, V & VI)  4th May (All three :) )...

Well, Doctor Who has been skirting round the edges of the romance between Clara and Danny for a while now.  It was only a matter of a time, I guess, before the Doctor became nothing more than a secondary character in his own show; the writers even brought back the John Smith persona to help him disappear into the background.

The sci-fi element is rather perfunctory in this weeks story.  A single robot with enough firepower to destroy the planet has turned up somewhere, and the Doctor must go undercover at Coal Hill in order to set an elaborate trap that he well then lure said robot into.

The rest of the story revolves around the relationship between Clara and Danny; Danny’s introduction to the Doctor, and his subsequent efforts to prove himself worthy of Clara in the...
