Now that we know that the mysterious symbols in Coulson's head were a city layout, we finally understand why he was having such a hard time.

He had the equivalent of Dora The Explorer's singing map in his head.

Can you imagine trying to sleep with all the racket going on ?

"I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map !"...

...over and over constantly.

Phew ! Tough guy Coulson for not letting that send him round the bend!

So we have a map of the city but no location for it, what to do, what to do. I can see a complicated plan involving a watch, sattellites, Australia, Fitz and six minutes coming on.

Well...the guys are good at this sort of thing, so it'll run like...

Skye and Coulson investigate and find dozens of pictures in the victim's apartment that have extra detail that makes the pattern in his head bigger.

I'm always surprised by how easy it appears to gain access to secret meetings in high security buildings without anyone raising the alarm.

Where are the security services, cameras, checkpoints, armoured doors? Why aren't sensitive meetings held on the top floor of skyscrapers? Why does there always seem to be easy access via fire doors?

HYDRA agents brazenly walk into a UN meeting and start disintegrating people while Gen. Talbot is speaking. This sparks global outrage, which is the natural consequence of melting Italian ambassadors.

S.H.I.E.L.D. are splashed all over the news as terrorists. Talbot is answering to his "tame" senator, who happens to be Christian Ward, brother of Grant Ward who is currently being all concilliatory and cryptic in Coulson’s basement.

Newly returned Simmons recognises the weapons used from her HYDRA infiltration, and...

We're not messing about this week.

It's bonkers central!

Everyone seems to be stressed, afraid, cracking up, psychotic, flying off the handle or looking forward to genocide, and all in the first few minutes !

We start with a Navy wedding dinner, which ends up with corpses aplenty, covered in same substance that the Obelisk transforms people into.

This is a HYDRA experiment on the way to weaponising the mysterious alien artefact for nefarious purposes. Well I'm assuming it's nefarious purposes, maybe they're working on a massive sculpture and thought they'd just turn everyone to stone to save on artist wages.

The opening of the episode is really a red herring, or possibly a dead herring considering the body count. This week is more about the characters and...

Flying cars, superheroes, gods, invisible Sky-borne aircraft carriers.  Agents Of SHIELD often skirts the fantastic, stretching the boundaries of the possible to breaking point. Within minutes of this episode, the boundaries are broken, jumped on and set fire to.

If ever there was a series that needed to hit the ground running this is it.

After a much hyped and anticipated start, with the back-up of the Marvel movies to add an extra punch, much was anticipated.

And it all almost went completely wrong.

Only in the last few episodes of season 1 did things pick up. Traitors, secret organisations, super soldiers, double dealings, and betrayals. All the fun of the world of made-up espionage, with a few juicy cameos thrown in. This is what we want.

So with the team on the run, S.H.I.E.L.D a broken entity, where do we begin?

Well 1945 obviously. HYDRA Nazis are on the run, the Red Skull is reported as dead, and it’s time to do a runner with the booty. In this case a shiny odd shaped...
